Cancer Action Now: Giving Canadians a Voice in the Fight Against Cancer

Situation

Canada's healthcare system faces significant challenges, and cancer care is no exception with long wait times, inconsistent access to treatment, and a fragmented approach to care. In response to a desire from the cancer community to unite for change, together with founding industry sponsor AstraZeneca, Burson brought together a broad tent alliance to advocate for change and make cancer care a national priority with policy makers.

Solution

The Cancer Action Now Alliance (CANA) was born, bringing together more than 40 organizations representing patients, health care professionals and life sciences companies. The Burson team serves as the CANA Secretariat, ensuring governance and consensus is at the core of the alliance, while undertaking strategic planning, earned media outreach, impactful digital campaigns, meaningful patient and care provider engagement, effective policy communications, and strategic government relations.

Success

We understand that real change starts with real stories. That's why we amplify the voices of Canadians impacted by cancer, sharing their powerful experiences publicly. These stories aren't just anecdotes; they are compelling narratives that humanize the challenges within the cancer care system and drive public demand for action. Our earned media efforts have resulted in 38.54 million impressions, bringing these crucial conversations into the spotlight.

CANA's collaborative advocacy has already yielded tangible results. Through persistent efforts, we've contributed to the implementation of life-saving cancer screening programs. We've also championed initiatives to improve access to innovative treatments, giving patients hope for a brighter future. These victories are a testament to the power of collective action and the unwavering dedication of our alliance members.
